May 13, 2011 By (Edit)“Don’t drink and drive” because “alcohol and driving don’t mix.” Those are just some of the very popular and old slogans about drunk driving. Traffic enforcers have been fighting against this huge menace since forever. Sadly, there are still a lot of irresponsible drunk motorists who wouldn’t really care if they crash into something, or someone. Despite the fact that there are already many warnings (signboards, educational manuals, laws, traffic enforcers, etc.), drunk driving is still very rampant in every part of the world. According to US statistics of 2008, 37% of road accidents are actually caused by intoxicated drivers of no specific age range – these drivers can be in their teens, 20’s, 30’s, and up; they can also be first-timers, experienced, non-professional, or professional drivers. This is a very alarming fact!
Physical effects of alcohol in our body
Alcohol is a very powerful drug – it can change the way you act, the way you think, and the way you feel. They say you can classify liquor drinkers into two: low-tolerance drinkers and high-tolerance drinkers. However, according to medical research, alcohol, no matter how much you consume, will surely paralyze your senses. But what are the effects of alcohol in the body? Let me try to explain them to you in simple terms. Lightheadedness accompanied by blurred vision is usually felt by a person intoxicated with alcohol. Hence, depth, distance, and speed perception is also disturbed. Excessive drinking can cause unconsciousness, nausea, asphyxia (oxygen deficiency) and even death. A person under the influence would also experience distressed reaction time due to the fact that his arms and legs will start to feel numb.
